National Highways

Published: 07 June 2024

Following the defect and associated void beneath the road that we found in earlier this year in March which was repaired over the Easter weekend, a further defect has developed in an adjacent patch on the A1(M).

I am therefore writing to tell you that we need to carry out urgent road surface repairs on the A1(M) northbound between junctions 6 (The Clock, Welwyn) and 7 (Langley Sidings/Stevenage South).

Following the discovery of this additional depression in the road surface, and subsequent survey and investigations, work involving excavation and reconstruction of the carriageway will be taking place this weekend to fill the void beneath the road surface. We will also utilise the closure to undertake further surveys in the area.

To carry out the work safely, the A1(M) northbound between junctions 6 and 7 will be closed from 9pm on Friday 7 June until 5am on Monday 10 June 2024, weather permitting.

While the A1(M) is closed, drivers will be directed to exit the A1(M) at junction 6 onto the A1000 Welwyn Bypass, then travel north on the B197 London Road through Knebworth, take the A602 westbound and re-join the A1(M) at junction 7.

We apologise for the inconvenience caused. Motorists are advised to plan ahead, allow more time for their journeys and follow the signposted diversion.
